El conjunto de ensayos reunidos en este volumen sobre el futuro del Modelo Social Europeo responde a la inspiración de un grupo de renovadores provenientes de la socialdemocracia británica y de otros países europeos y a la iniciativa de Policy Network, un think tank internacional creado en el año 2000. El punto de partida es la creencia en un modelo social europeo reformado y el rechazo del modelo norteamericano o neoliberal como alternativa. En la economía global, la Europa Social debe asumir las prioridades gemelas de la justicia social y la competitividad económica: un Estado de Bienestar solidario y unos servicios sociales sólidos serán fundamentales para triunfar en la economía del conocimiento y de los servicios del siglo XXI. El tema que inspira estos ensayos es la revitalización de la protección social en Europa.

Luc Soete es también miembro del órgano consultivo científico neerlandés Adviesraad voor wetenschap en Technologie (AWT).<BR><BR>Luc Soete estudió ciencias económicas en general y la economía del desarrollo en la Universidad de Gant y comenzó su carrera como investigador en el Departamento de Economía de la Universidad de Amberes. Loukas Tsoukalis was born in Athens in 1950. He studied economics and international relations at the University of Manchester, the College of Europe in Bruges, and the University of Oxford where he obtained his doctoral degree. He taught for many years at Oxford University (St. Catherine?s College and St. Antony?s College). He later became Professor at the European Institute of the London School of Economics and Political Science (Eleftherios Venizelos Chair). He also taught at the European University Institute in Florence and at Sciences Po in Paris. Former Special Adviser to the President of the European Commission.<BR><BR>He is presently Professor of European Integration at the University of Athens, President of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy (ELIAMEP), and Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges. WEIL, PATRICK
Patrick Weil (born 1956) is a French historian and political scientist. He is a research fellow at CNRS, at the Centre for the social history of the 20th century at the University of Paris 1. He studies the history of immigration in France. In 1992 he received the research prize of the National Assembly of France for his work La France et ses étrangers.<BR><BR>He worked as Chief of Staff of the Secretariat of State for immigrants in 1981 and 1982, and was a member of the Stasi Commission, and a member of the board of the Cité Nationale de l?Histoire de l?Immigration (Museum of the History of Immigration) - a position which, with seven others, he resigned on 18 May 2007, in protest against the creation of a ministry of immigration and national identity by Nicolas Sarkozy.<BR><BR>Wikipedia

Giddens nació en el Reino Unido el 18 de Enero de 1938 en una familia de clase media baja en el norte de Londres, y fue el primer miembro de su familia en ir a la Universidad. Actualmente está casado y tiene dos hijos. Sus estudios de filosofía los realizó en la Universidad de Hull y en la London School of Economics ?que dirige desde 1997-, cuando eran focos de la ultraizquierda en la década del `60. En 1976 fue admitido como profesor en Cambridge, pero durante sus 15 años allí fue nueve veces rechazado para una promoción. Algunos lo atribuyen a su origen humilde. Desde 1997 es director de la London School of Economics and Political Science.
